Only two makers in our data put a number on it. Whisker says the Litter-Robot 5 suits “up to 5 cats”, the Litter-Robot 4 “up to 4 cats” and the Litter-Robot EVO “up to 2 cats”. Neakasa, PETKIT and PetSafe call their boxes “multi-cat” without naming a number. Every maker gives its waste-bin emptying time for one cat, so expect to empty the bin sooner with more cats. Feline health groups also still advise one box per cat plus one, which is covered further down.

What each maker actually says about multiple cats

The wording matters here. “Suitable for up to 5 cats” is a specific claim. “Perfect for multi-cat households” is not.

  • Whisker Litter-Robot 5: “Multi-cat friendly, suitable for up to 5 cats at 3-30 lbs.”
  • Whisker Litter-Robot 4: “Multi-cat friendly: one supports up to 4 cats.” Whisker also says one unit is “suitable for up to four cats–removing the need for multiple boxes.”
  • Whisker Litter-Robot EVO: “Works for up to 2 cats per household from 3-19 lbs.” Whisker describes it as “ideal for homes with 1-2 cats.”
  • Neakasa M1 Plus: “M1 is perfect for multi-cat households!” There is no cat count.
  • Neakasa M1 Lite Plus: Neakasa calls it “ideal for multi-cat households” and lists “Multi-cat recognition” among the app features.
  • PETKIT Purobot Max 3: PETKIT says “the PETKIT app monitors multi-cat households by identifying each cat’s unique litter box usage habits and weight changes.” There is no cat count.
  • PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin: “Ideal for multi-cat households – provides a fresh bed of litter after every use to support multiple cats.”
  • PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Smart: the spec table lists “Single or multi-cat households”. The FAQ adds: “While our ScoopFree solutions are suitable for a multi-cat household, your mileage may vary depending on how many cats you have in the house.”

How often you will empty it with more than one cat

None of these makers publishes an emptying interval for two or more cats. The figures in the table are for one cat, except Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 line, which names no cat count. Neakasa’s FAQ says: “Usually you only need to empty the waste container about 14 days for one cat.”

A waste bin holds a fixed volume, so more visits fill it faster. We don’t divide the one-cat figure by the number of cats, though, because no maker or vet source gives that calculation. The PetSafe crystal tray works the same way. PetSafe says a tray “lasts up to 30 days” and that “your mileage may vary” with more cats. Since the trays are sold in packs ($73.49 for a 3-pack as of 2026-11-02), a shorter tray life raises your running costs. You can model that in the cost calculator.

Bigger bins mean fewer trips. By published volume, the Neakasa M1 models (11.23 L) have the largest bins in our data. The PETKIT (7 L) and PetSafe SmartSpin (6 L) come next. Whisker does not publish a liter figure for its drawers.

One box per cat, plus one: what vet sources say

Two of the sources this guide relies on give the same guidance, and it predates robot boxes:

  • The ASPCA says: “Make sure you have one for each cat in your household, plus one extra. For example, if you have three cats, you’ll need a minimum of four litter boxes.”
  • The Cornell Feline Health Center says: “Provide as many boxes as there are cats in the house, plus one. This decreases competition and gives each cat a box of his or her own.”

This conflicts with some marketing copy. Whisker says one Litter-Robot 4 means “removing the need for multiple boxes.” PetSafe says of the SmartSpin: “You no longer have to worry about competing litter boxes.” Those are the makers’ claims. Neither the ASPCA nor Cornell says a self-cleaning box changes the count.

A practical middle ground is to keep a regular box alongside the robot, or to run more than one unit. A plain open pan was $12.99 at PetSmart as of 2026-11-02 (regular price $14.99). If a cat starts going outside the box, the ASPCA suggests, “try switching to a traditional type of litter box.” Talk to your veterinarian about any change in litter box habits.

Per-cat tracking in the apps

Several of these boxes tell cats apart in the app. Here is what each maker says the app records:

  • Whisker (Litter-Robot 5): “After each visit, WasteID distinguishes #1 vs #2.”
  • Whisker (Litter-Robot EVO): “a 7-day look at your cats’ visits and individual cat weights.”
  • PETKIT: each cat’s “litter box usage habits and weight changes.”
  • Neakasa (M1 Lite Plus): “Multi-cat recognition.”
  • PetSafe (SmartSpin): “real-time health data including weight updates and litter box usage.”

These records come from the device. They are not a diagnosis. A cat’s weight range also matters, because cats outside the published range may not register reliably. Whisker, for example, recommends semi-automatic mode for kittens under 3 lb. See large cats for the full weight limits.

Bottom line

If you want a maker’s own cat count, Whisker is the only brand that publishes one: up to 5 cats (Litter-Robot 5), 4 (Litter-Robot 4) or 2 (EVO). The others say “multi-cat” without a number. They publish larger waste bins, but only for one cat. Whichever you pick, the ASPCA and Cornell still advise one box per cat plus one. If price matters too, see cheap self-cleaning litter boxes.
