As of 2026-11-02, the lowest-priced self-cleaning box in our data is the PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Smart at $269.99. Next come a group of models priced around $380–$400 on sale: the Neakasa M1 Lite Plus, PetSafe SmartSpin, Neakasa M1 Plus and PETKIT Purobot Max 3. Whisker’s Litter-Robot models run from $599 to $799. Paying less mostly means a lower stated cat weight limit, fewer named cats, or a box that needs its own refills. It does not mean giving up the app, because every model below has one.
Price ladder (U.S. maker stores, as of 2026-11-02)
The table is sorted by the lowest price shown on the maker’s own store that day. Sale prices change often, so check before you buy.
| Model | List price | Sale price | Mechanism | Cat weight range | Waste capacity, per maker |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Smart | $269.99 | — | rake over a crystal tray | not published | tray “lasts up to 30 days” |
| Neakasa M1 Lite Plus | $499.99 | $379.99 | open-top rotating | 2.2 to “around 33” lb | 11.23 L, 14 days (one cat) |
| PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin | $399.99 | — (bundle $379.99) | enclosed sphere | up to 25 lb | 6 L, “up to 2 weeks” |
| Neakasa M1 Plus | $549.99 | $399.99 | open-top rotating | 2.2 to “around 33” lb | 11.23 L, “Up to 14 Days” |
| PETKIT Purobot Max 3 | $499.99 | $399.99 | enclosed rotating | 3.3–22 lb | 7 L, “up to 15 days” (single cat) |
| Whisker Litter-Robot EVO | $599 | — | enclosed globe | 3–19 lb | “up to 7 days” (one cat) |
| Whisker Litter-Robot 4 | $699 | — | enclosed globe | 3–25 lb | “as low as once every 8 days” |
| Whisker Litter-Robot 5 | $799 | — | enclosed globe | 3–30 lb | “up to 10 days” (one cat) |
PetSafe also lists the hooded Crystal Smart at $299.99, but it was out of stock on the check date. On that day, PetSafe’s $379.99 SmartSpin bundle cost less than the $399.99 box alone. PetSafe says the bundle adds “2 Packs Waste Bin Liners (50 liners total)” and “4 Essential oil deodorizers (2-Month Supply).”
What you give up at lower prices
The specs do not get steadily better as the price rises. Here is what the published figures show.
The app is not the dividing line. All eight models list app support. What changes is what the maker says the app records. PetSafe says the Crystal Smart offers “Real-time health tracking through activity logs.” It does not mention weight tracking for this model. PetSafe says the SmartSpin app gives “weight updates and litter box usage.” Neakasa’s M1 Lite Plus page lists “Litter level monitoring,” “Real-time monitoring” and “Multi-cat recognition,” but it makes no health-tracking claim, while the M1 Plus page does.
Weight sensing and published weight limits. PetSafe publishes no cat weight range for the Crystal Smart. Its rule is age-based: “If your kitten is under 6 months of age, leave your ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box unplugged and scoop waste until your kitten is 6 months old.” Among Whisker’s boxes, the lowest-priced EVO also has the lowest limit (3–19 lb), against 3–25 lb on the Litter-Robot 4 and 3–30 lb on the Litter-Robot 5. Whisker also names fewer cats for the EVO: up to 2, against 4 and 5. More on this in multiple cats and large cats.
Capacity. The lowest-priced box has no waste bin at all. The Crystal Smart is “Designed for use with crystal litter only” and uses “Leak-proof disposable trays with crystal litter.” Among the bin-based boxes, the lower-priced Neakasa models list the largest bins (11.23 L). The Whisker models list the shortest emptying times (7 to 10 days for one cat). So a higher price does not buy more capacity here.
Running costs can reverse the ranking. A ScoopFree crystal tray 3-pack was $73.49 as of 2026-11-02, about $24.50 per tray. PetSafe says each tray “lasts up to 30 days” and, about multi-cat homes, that “your mileage may vary depending on how many cats you have in the house.” The boxes that use clumping litter have other costs, such as liners, filters and litter. Run both through the cost calculator before deciding the cheapest box is the cheapest to own, and see running costs for the supply prices.
When a sifting box or a plain pan makes more sense
A robot is not the only lower-cost option.
- A plain open pan was $12.99 at PetSmart as of 2026-11-02 (regular $14.99). The X-Large open pan was $9.89 (regular $17.49). You still scoop by hand, but there is nothing to plug in and no sensor weight limit.
- A manual sifting box lets you separate clumps by lifting nested trays instead of scooping. It has no motor and no app. The sifting and rotating litter boxes guide explains how these work.
Either one can also serve as the “plus one” box that the ASPCA and Cornell recommend next to a robot in multi-cat homes. If your cat’s weight is outside a model’s published range, a plain pan avoids the problem entirely.
Bottom line
The cheapest self-cleaning box by sticker price is the PetSafe Crystal Smart ($269.99). It needs crystal-litter trays at $73.49 per 3-pack, and PetSafe publishes no cat weight limit for it. If you want a waste bin and clumping litter, the next step is about $380–$400 on sale (Neakasa, PetSafe SmartSpin, PETKIT). Whisker’s EVO is its lowest-priced model at $599. Compare the total cost, not just the box price, in the cost calculator.
