Looking for the best automatic litter box? The table above won’t name a winner, because we don’t test or rank products. It lines up eight current models by the specs and U.S. prices their makers publish, so you can rule out the ones that don’t fit your cats, litter or space. Narrow the list with the filters, then confirm the price on the maker’s official page.

How to read each column

  • Model: links to our model page where one exists; “official page” opens the maker’s U.S. store.
  • Price: the brand’s U.S. store price, checked 2026-11-02. If there’s a sale, the sale price is on top and the list price below it (Neakasa M1 Plus: $399.99, list $549.99).
  • Design: enclosed or open-top.
  • Mechanism:
    • rotating globe: Litter-Robot 4, 5 and EVO, PETKIT Purobot Max 3, and PetSafe SmartSpin (PetSafe calls it “Spherical Design”).
    • open top rotating: Neakasa M1 Plus and M1 Lite Plus.
    • crystal tray: PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Smart, which uses disposable trays of crystal litter.
  • Cat weight: the maker’s stated range, for example 3–25 lb (Litter-Robot 4) or 2.2–33 lb (both Neakasa models).
  • Cats (maker’s claim): filled in only where the maker gives a number. Only Whisker does: 4 for the Litter-Robot 4, 5 for the Litter-Robot 5 and 2 for the EVO.
  • Litter: the types the maker says work. Only the Crystal Smart lists crystal (“designed for use with crystal litter only”), only the SmartSpin lists non-clumping, and only the Purobot Max 3 lists tofu, corn and mixed.
  • App: every model here has one.
  • Waste capacity: the maker’s own words, often stated for one cat (Litter-Robot 5: “up to 10 days” “in a one-cat household”). Treat these as claims; makers don’t measure them the same way.
  • Size (W × D × H): inches. Whisker’s “22” x 27”” footprint and PetSafe’s Crystal Smart figure (uncovered) don’t label their axes, so the order is our reading.

Why some cells show ”—”

A dash means the maker doesn’t publish that figure on its U.S. product page. We don’t fill gaps with retailer listings or guesses.

  • Cat weight: PetSafe gives no range for the Crystal Smart and only a maximum for the SmartSpin (“cats up to 25 lb”), shown as ”—–25 lb.”
  • Cats: Neakasa says the M1 “is perfect for multi-cat households!”; PETKIT gives no number; PetSafe says “your mileage may vary depending on how many cats you have in the house.”
  • Size: not listed on the Neakasa M1 Lite Plus or PetSafe SmartSpin pages.

Using the filters for common situations

A filter hides a model only when its published spec rules it out. A model with ”—” in that column stays visible, so check its official page yourself.

  • Two or more cats: choosing 2 keeps all eight. The Whisker models claim 2 or more, and the rest publish no number. Choosing 3+ hides the EVO, which Whisker aims at “households with 1-2 cats.” See multiple cats.

  • A small or young cat (under 3 lb): enter, say, 2.5 lb. The Whisker models (3 lb minimum) and Purobot Max 3 (3.3 lb) drop out. Both Neakasa models (2.2 lb) and both PetSafe models (no minimum published) stay. The table can’t filter by age, so read each maker’s guidance:

    • Whisker: under 3 lb, use semi-automatic mode.
    • Neakasa: Kitten Mode turns automatic cleaning off under 2.2 lb.
    • PETKIT: the Max 3 is for cats “6+ months old.”
    • PetSafe: keep the Crystal Smart unplugged until a kitten is 6 months old.

For questions about a young cat, ask your veterinarian.

  • A big cat: the weight field says “smallest cat,” but it checks against both ends of each range. Run it once with your lightest cat and once with your heaviest. At 27 lb, the Litter-Robot 5 (up to 30 lb), both Neakasa models and the Crystal Smart (no range) remain. The Litter-Robot 4 and SmartSpin (25 lb) drop out. Also compare entries: 15.75 × 15.75 in on the Litter-Robot 4 and 5, 10.51 × 10.74 in on the Max 3. See large cats.

  • A budget: the price filter uses the sale price when there is one. Max $400 leaves five models: both Neakasa models, the Purobot Max 3, the SmartSpin and the Crystal Smart. Max $300 leaves only the Crystal Smart ($269.99), whose trays cost $73.49 per 3-pack, each lasting “up to 30 days,” per PetSafe. Check running costs and the cost calculator before deciding on price alone.

Discontinued and renamed models

  • Litter-Robot 3 Connect: Whisker says it “is no longer available” and points buyers to the EVO. Its page still shows an old “As low as $549” but lists it out of stock, so it isn’t in the table. See Litter-Robot 3 vs. 4.
  • PETKIT PuraMax 2: its U.S. product address now redirects to the Purobot Max 3. The model numbers differ (P9902 in the PuraMax 2 manual, P9906 for the Max 3), and PETKIT doesn’t call the Max 3 a renamed PuraMax 2, so we treat them as separate models.
  • Neakasa M1: now sold as the M1 Plus and M1 Lite Plus, both on our Neakasa M1 page.
  • Not included: the Litter-Robot 5 Pro (“As low as $999”; Whisker lists its camera as a Pro feature), PetSafe’s hooded Crystal Smart ($299.99, out of stock when checked), and “ScoopFree Ultra,” which isn’t in PetSafe’s current U.S. catalog.

Bottom line

Filter by your cats’ weights and your litter first, since those remove the most models. Then compare price, size and waste capacity among what’s left, and check any ”—” on the maker’s page. For non-Whisker options in more depth, see Litter-Robot alternatives.
