Best Litter for Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes: What Makers Allow
Which litter types Whisker, Neakasa, PETKIT and PetSafe allow or rule out for their self-cleaning boxes, by model, from manuals and official FAQs.

For most self-cleaning litter boxes, the makers ask for clumping clay (bentonite) litter. Whisker, Neakasa and PETKIT all build their sifting around clumps, and all three rule out non-clumping and pellet litters in some form. The two big exceptions are PetSafe’s ScoopFree Crystal Smart, which is “designed for use with crystal litter only”, and PetSafe’s SmartSpin, which PetSafe says takes clumping or non-clumping litter. The table below sets out what each maker says.
Litter type by model: what the makers say
“Yes” means the maker names the type as suitable. “No” means the maker rules it out. “Not stated” means we found no statement either way in the sources listed. That is not a yes.
| Model | Clumping clay | Crystal / silica | Tofu | Corn | Pine / wood pellets | Non-clumping |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whisker Litter-Robot 4, 5, EVO | Yes (recommended) | Partly: beads that pass the screen; translucent/white not recommended | Some brands (Whisker blog) | Mixed (see below) | No | No |
| Neakasa M1 Plus / M1 Lite Plus | Yes (fast-clumping bentonite or mineral) | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | No (wood pellets) | No |
| PETKIT Purobot Max 3 | Yes | Not stated | Yes | Yes | Not stated | Not stated (page lists clumping litters) |
| PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Smart | No | Yes, crystal only (PetSafe trays) | No | No | No | No |
| PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin | Yes (recommended) | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Yes |
Whisker (Litter-Robot 4, 5 and EVO)
Whisker’s product-page FAQ says: “The best litter for Litter-Robot is clumping clay litter.” The LR4 manual (p. 12) says the sifting system needs clumping litter to work properly and recommends a high-quality clay-clumping litter. Whisker allows silica beads and crystals that are small enough to pass through the screen, but notes that translucent or white litter “may impact” the litter-level and Drawer Full Indicator readings. On LR4, LR5 and EVO, that kind of litter is listed as not recommended.
The LR4 manual’s FAQ (p. 35) lists litters that do not work: strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping, newspaper-based, pine-based and absorbent wood pellet litter. It also warns that lightweight litters such as corn or wheat “may not pass through the screen effectively”. Whisker’s own litter guide is less strict on corn. It marks one corn-based clumping litter as working, though it “may need more frequent changes”, and another corn-based litter as not recommended. For tofu, the guide says some brands work depending on clumping and particle size. Full details are on our Litter-Robot litter page.
Neakasa (M1 Plus and M1 Lite Plus)
Neakasa says the M1 “works best with fast-clumping, scoopable litter”. Its FAQ rules out highly absorbent, non-clumping, loosely clumping, newspaper and wood pellet types. For best results it recommends fast-clumping granular litter such as bentonite or mineral litter. The M1 Lite Plus page uses the same exclusion list. Neakasa also gives a size limit: the filter sifts particles up to 3 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length. Neither page mentions crystal, tofu or corn by name. More on the model: Neakasa M1.
PETKIT (Purobot Max 3)
PETKIT says the Max 3 works with “99% of clumping litters including clay, tofu, corn, and bentonite-based options”. It ships with two sifters: a standard one and a “Honeycomb Fine” one for finer clay or bentonite. The PuraMax 2 manual is a related model’s manual, not the Max 3’s. It assigns the standard sifter to tofu and mixed litter and the honeycomb sifter to mineral litter (p. 5). It also warns against particles larger than 1.2 cm long and 3 mm in diameter (p. 7). We found no PETKIT statement on crystal or pine.
PetSafe (Crystal Smart and SmartSpin)
The two PetSafe boxes work differently, so their rules are opposites:
- ScoopFree Crystal Smart: a rake-and-tray design. PetSafe lists the compatible litter as its own ScoopFree Crystal Litter in disposable trays. A 3-pack of trays was $73.49 at PetSafe as of 2026-11-02, and PetSafe says a tray “lasts up to 30 days”.
- ScoopFree SmartSpin: a spherical, rotating design. PetSafe’s FAQ says you can use any clumping or non-clumping litter, and recommends premium clumping litter for the best results. The bundle FAQ recommends clay clumping litter for optimal performance.
Why makers restrict litter
The makers’ stated reasons are mechanical:
- The sifting needs firm clumps. Whisker says its sifting system needs clumping litter to work properly. Neakasa’s exclusion list (non-clumping, loosely clumping) points the same way: if waste doesn’t form a solid clump, the sifter can’t separate it from clean litter.
- Particle size has to suit the screen. Whisker allows crystals only if they pass through the screen, and says pellet litters “will not sift properly”. Neakasa (3 mm / 10 mm) and PETKIT (1.2 cm / 3 mm) publish particle-size limits.
- Sensors read the litter. Whisker’s warning about translucent or white crystal litter is about litter-level and drawer-full accuracy, not about sifting.
- Lightweight litter behaves differently. Whisker’s LR4 manual says corn or wheat may not pass through the screen effectively.
- Crystal-tray boxes are a different system. The Crystal Smart is built around PetSafe’s crystal trays, which is why PetSafe limits it to crystal litter.
Choosing litter by mechanism
- Rotating globe (Litter-Robot, Purobot Max 3, SmartSpin): start with clumping clay, because it is the one type all three makers accept. On a Litter-Robot, avoid translucent or white crystals. On the Max 3, PETKIT also names tofu and corn.
- Open-top rotating (Neakasa M1 Plus / Lite Plus): fast-clumping bentonite or mineral litter, within the 3 mm × 10 mm particle limit.
- Crystal tray (ScoopFree Crystal Smart): PetSafe’s crystal trays only.
- Switching litters: Whisker suggests keeping your current brand when you first set up a Litter-Robot, as long as it clumps, because a new box and a new litter at once may increase a cat’s anxiety. If you use non-clumping litter now, Whisker says you will need to switch. Ask your veterinarian about any litter concerns tied to your cat’s health.
What clumping clay costs
At PetSmart as of 2026-11-02, two mass-market clumping clay litters were:
- 35 lb bag: $19.79 on sale, $21.49 regular, so about $0.57–$0.61 per lb.
- 38 lb bag: $24.99 on sale, $25.99 regular, so about $0.66–$0.68 per lb.
Whisker’s own Lit Premium was $30 for 20 lb ($1.50 per lb). Whisker says the Litter-Robot 4 uses “up to 50% less cat litter”. That is Whisker’s claim, and we have no independent figure for litter use per cat. See running costs and the comparison table.
Bottom line
Clumping clay is the one litter type every maker here accepts, except on the crystal-only ScoopFree Crystal Smart. Beyond that, the rules vary by model, so check the manual for your exact model before you buy.
